I'm leaving to Stockholm tomorrow morning so I think it's only appropriate to flash back on my last trip to Stockholm. On the way to young women were sitting next to me, one of them unfortunate enough to be stuck to a wheelchair, but she seemed so happy to be alive anyway, she had MS and was recovering from a bad period. She mentioned she had a very good partner, so I guess he was a great support to her. As I understood it she was visiting Sweden to check out some puppies. There was probably another reason as well, but the puppies were at least part of it.
Now finally to my point. When we had just landed she asked how you say 'I'm sorry' in Swedish. When she heard it was 'Förlåt' she replied, that is sounded just like 'forljót' in Icelandic which literally means 'mud-ulgy', I had never thought of that before, it does indeed sound a bit familiar.
We do on the other hand have a saying 'Ég biðst forláts', which means 'I beg your pardon' and there I am certain we have the same source as the Swedish word. This saying is normally not used is daily language, more appropriate if you are really offended. Normally we use the word 'fyrirgefðu' which if broken to pieces means exactly 'forgive' (for = fyrir, give = gefa/gefðu).
